Publisher Of The Year
More awards success at White Light towers! We collected two trophies at the Scottish Magazine Awards last night, with our Managing Director Fraser Allen named as Publisher Of The Year for launching Hot Rum Cow – an ambitious international magazine with a completely different revenue model to traditional newsstand titles.
Meanwhile, Creative Director Eric Campbell and his team landed the award for Best Consumer Magazine Design for their outstanding work on the publication.
There were also honours for Senior Editor Simon Lyle, shortlisted for Editor Of The Year, and Editor-at-Large Liz Longden, shortlisted for Feature Writer Of The Year.
And it didn’t stop there. We were also shortlisted for Consumer Magazine Of The Year, Best Cover and overall Magazine Of The Year.
The judging panel was chaired by Sally Cartwright, Chairman of the ABC and ex-Publishing Director of Hello! magazine. "Hot Rum Cow is a remarkable magazine, so beautifully designed and produced," she said. "As a calling card for a contract publisher, it beats anything I have ever seen before. It must have a huge pass-on readership." see detail →
Eric is UK's best magazine designer
We're delighted and proud to announce that our Creative Director Eric Campbell won the Designer of the Year trophy at this year's PPA Independent Publisher Awards. Eric took the award for his outstanding work on Hot Rum Cow, the magazine we launched last year to celebrate 'adventures in the world of drinking'.
The judges said: “This magazine doesn’t just look fantastic – it is also very warm and engaging, which makes you want to read it. Eric makes lovely use of illustration and photography, presenting it in a very nice format with great use of paper stock. The presentation is fun – it doesn’t take itself too seriously, with a great use of humour in the design.”
Eric said: "I'm absolutely delighted, especially when I was up against such a talented group of individuals. I love working on Hot Rum Cow as it brings together so many talented writers, illustrators and photographers in one magazine and I guess that collective passion was apparent to the judges given their generous comments."
The UK-wide PPA Independent Publisher Awards are among the largest and most prestigious publishing events in Europe, and winning the award was a great coup after just four issues of the magazine.
Hot Rum Cow Editor Simon Lyle was also shortlisted for Editor of the Year and Hot Rum Cow itself was shortlisted for Launch of the Year.

White Light Media won the Gold Award for Best Magazine in this year's CIPR Pride Scotland Awards. The award went to Connected, the magazine we write and design on behalf of Learning and Teaching Scotland (LTS). Published three times a year, Connected distributed to all teachers across Scotland. White Light Media transformed the design and editorial structure of the magazine after winning the contract to publish Connected in 2005. After retaining the contract in two subsequent repitches, we have since enabled LTS to relaunch the magazine from an IT-focused publication to one that embraces all aspects of education. Above is the latest edition of Connected.
